Considering a Career in Arboriculture?

Learn a little about Jocelyn....what makes her tick....and what she loves about this industry.

When did you first remember hearing about arboriculture as a career?

August of 2020

How did you take your first step into the world of tree work?

 After learning that there was actually a career that would blend my         love of working outdoors with other interests, I started contacting tree       companies on LinkedIn.

What's the best thing about you day as an arborist?

Spending so much time outside has done wonders for my mental health, and knowing that I am learning to properly care for trees and plants is fulfilling.

What is the hardest thing about starting a career in treework?

I quickly learned that there is a steep learning curve.  The process of learning how to be the most useful crew member can be challenging.

What did you want to be when you were 10 years old?

An architect

What advice would you have for young girls thinking about their future careers?

Take the time to get to know yourself and the specific things that make you happy.  Don't spend your time doing things that other people want you to do or that you think you "should" do.  The only person who has to love what you do is you!

What are the benefits of working outside in the fresh air each day?

For me, spending so much time outside is a great way to feel more connected with nature, and this provides me with a sense of calm and relaxation.  This type of work also means that you get to spend more of your time enjoying the sunlight than a lot of other people do.

Would you say you are following your bliss?

I would ay that I'm still in the process of learning and trying to understand exactly what my "bliss" is, but I'm certainly pursuing it.

What's the next goal you'd like to reach in this profession?

I would like to earn my MA hoising license so that I can operate more machinery and be more of an asset to the crews on job sites.

I have only used a battery saw so far.

What has being being an arborist taught you about yourself?

Beginning the process of becoming an arborist has taught me that I can very easily learn and get comfortable with things that used to frighten me, such as driving large trucks, using a chipper, and lower large pieces to the ground.

How do you usually unwind at the end of the day?

I soak my feet in Epsom salts while watching TV with my partner, Julia, and our cat, Cooper.

How would you describe yourself to people who don't know you?

I would describe myself as someone who does not give up in the pursuit of what I desire to achieve....personally or professionally.
